The master program Data Science aims at a strong international embedding in research and specialization opportunities in a range of science disciplines. In order to ensure this, all the lectures of the master program are held in English and the master’s thesis is written in English. Furthermore, interdisciplinarity via specialization lectures from curricula outside informatics is a key component of this masters degree program.
Focus
Data Science deals with large, heterogeneous data (big data) from different application areas, in order to obtain valuable findings and meaningful and actionable information to generate actionable information. Tasks in Data Science include obtaining a thorough understanding of the problem domain (Business Undestanding), processing and fusion of heterogeneous data from different sources (Data Gathering), analysis and statistical modelling of the Data (Data Analytics) to interactive visualization of the data (Visual Analytics) and the use of the results (Decision Support and Deployment). This curriculum conveys and integrates competences from the fields of information technology, mathematics as well as specific application disciplines.
Professional Activity
The Data Science Masters provides an indepth, scientifically founded, education. Graduates are qualified, amongst others, to act as a link between the technical infrastructures and the domains in research and development. They are capable of discovering and understanding complex interrelationships, patterns and knowledge from raw data in a structured way and to communicate it efficiently. They have the competence to support research and innovation in the field of eScience both from a core technical perspective as well as interdisciplinarily to drive the development of data-driven technologies.
Berufsfelder
Aufbauend auf ein Bachelorstudium führen Masterstudien zu einer Vertiefung und Spezialisierung. Die Absolvent_innen der Masterstudien sind sowohl für höhere Positionen in der Wirtschaft als auch für eine anschließende wissenschaftliche Karriere (Doktoratsstudien) qualifiziert.
Einstiegsvoraussetzungen
Die Zulassung zu einem Masterstudium setzt den Abschluss eines fachlich in Frage kommenden Bachelorstudiums bzw. Bachelorstudienganges an einer Fachhochschule oder eines anderen gleichwertigen Studiums an einer anerkannten in- oder ausländischen postsekundären Bildungseinrichtung voraus.
Studierende, deren Muttersprache nicht Englisch ist, haben die Kenntnis der englischen Sprache nachzuweisen. Für einen erfolgreichen Studienfortgang werden Englischkenntnisse nach Referenzniveau B2 des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens für Sprachen empfohlen.
Welche abgeschlossenen Studienrichtungen für die Zulassung zu den einzelnen Masterstudien in Frage kommen und welche fachlichen sowie sprachlichen Kenntnisse im Detail vorausgesetzt werden, sind im jeweiligen Studienplan einzusehen.
Bei Zulassung mit einem Bachelorstudium, das nicht an der TU Wien abgelegt wurde, können gegebenenfalls zusätzliche Prüfungen vorgeschrieben werden. Ansprechpartner bezüglich der Zulassung zu einem Studium sind die entsprechenden Studiendekanate. Trotz der Bezeichnung Masterstudium schließen die Studien mit dem bekannten Titel Diplomingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) ab.
